Mental Health & Psychology

Our Mental Health & Psychology programme is open to all students and is especially valuable for those studying Medicine, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, and related fields.

Saint Lucia’s mental healthcare system faces significant challenges, including limited resources and low public awareness. At Caribbean Elective, we believe in the power of passionate students to make a difference. This programme empowers you to get involved, learn, and contribute meaningfully.

Each year, we bring together a dedicated group of students to work within local communities and alongside underrepresented groups, including:

  • Young offenders
  • Individuals experiencing homelessness
  • School and community groups
  • LGBTQIA+ organisations

Guided by experienced local mentors, you’ll explore a range of community settings to observe, learn, and co-create impactful mental health workshops. Before stepping in, you’ll have the opportunity to understand the local context, culture, and existing support systems.

This is a challenging, eye-opening, and deeply rewarding experience. You’ll meet inspiring individuals, collaborate with mental health professionals, and gain real-world insight into cross-cultural healthcare and community outreach.

What You’ll Gain

Our programme offers a unique, immersive look into mental healthcare in the Caribbean. You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Visit and support institutions such as children’s homes, juvenile rehabilitation centres, homeless shelters, and special education schools
  • Design and deliver impactful workshops across communities

Whether you’re aiming to deepen your knowledge, gain practical experience, or make a lasting impact, this programme offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both personal and professional growth!
