Politics in the Community

If you’re curious about how politics shapes communities, policies, and lives, this immersive four-week programme offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience politics in action in the Caribbean context.

Led by Dominic Fedee, former Minister of Tourism and current Senator in Saint Lucia, you’ll gain exclusive, first-hand insight into the inner workings of government, policy-making, and community impact.

Open to all students!

What You’ll Experience

Throughout the programme, you’ll work closely with political leaders, civil servants, and grassroots organisations to explore the relationship between policy and real-life outcomes. Highlights include:

  • Shadowing political figures and attending key meetings
  • Visiting local communities and hearing from citizens directly affected by political decisions
  • Meeting influential figures in Saint Lucian public life—from MPs and Senators to NGO leaders
  • Learning how policies are designed, debated, and implemented in small island developing states

By the end of the programme, you’ll use your knowledge and experience to help design policy proposals that address real societal challenges, focusing on ways to improve quality of life, create opportunity, and promote social justice in Saint Lucia.

A Rich Historical & Political Context

To fully understand today’s political environment, the programme also explores the Caribbean’s complex and fascinating political history, including:

  • Colonisation and European exploration
  • The impact of slavery and the transatlantic trade
  • The rise and fall of the West Indies Federation
  • The path to independence and the formation of modern democratic institutions

You’ll also take part in dynamic discussions about globalisation, climate change, small-state diplomacy, and the reparations movement, giving you a comprehensive perspective on Caribbean politics and international relations.

  • Make an impact by contributing to community-informed policy development
