Healthcare Electives

The Caribbean Hospital Experience
Daily work transfers included – Rated “Excellent” on TrustPilot

Working in a Caribbean hospital is the experience of a lifetime. Hospitals are often underfunded and understaffed meaning that passionate staff work under real pressure to deliver as best they can for their patients. Working in this environment will be challenging but will also be immensely rewarding and set you up for any challenges you’ll face later in your career.

This Elective will be based on the stunning island of Saint Lucia, more precisely at the Millennium Heights Medical Complex (sometimes known as OKEU Hospital). It is the largest hospital in Saint Lucia and leads the islands healthcare system. The complex was only opened as a fully operational facility in 2020, making it one of the best-developed hospitals in the Caribbean region

What will it be like working at OKEU?

There are a number of specialities available for you to choose from, which are available on a first-come-first-served basis. These are Internal Medicine, Radiology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Accident and Emergency, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, Pathology, Nephrology, Paediatrics and Ophthalmology and Oncology. Upon your application, you will be asked to choose up to 5 preferences from the different departments, and in most cases, you will be allocated to experience 3 of those different departments during your Elective.

LATEST UPDATE (1/1/25): OKEU Hospital is currently requesting that students provide proof of a negative COVID test within 3 days of the start date of their placement at the hospital. PCR and Antigen are accepted and the test can be conducted prior to travelling or in Saint Lucia depending on your arrival date. You will need to cover the cost of this test, costs in Saint Lucia are approximately £35.

Please note that demand is high for this programme, and processing time at the hospital is lengthy. You should only apply if you are able to wait 4-8 weeks before you need to provide final details to your University.

We usually sell out of places on the programme from January to August very quickly so we advise you apply as soon as possible to secure your place!
